The first boxing match in Puerto Rico was held on January 15, 1899, and the first Puerto Rican to win a world title was the great Hall of Famer, Sixto “El Gallito” Escobar, who beat Baby Cassanova in 1934 to win bantamweight belt. The new Argentina coach Diego Maradona this afternoon declared his intention to bring the World Cup back to his homeland more than 20 years after his greatest triumph as a player. Argentina have failed to reach even the semi-finals of the World Cup since Maradona inspired them to glory in 1986 by producing arguably the greatest series of performances by an individual in any team sport. They currently lie third in the South American qualifying league for the 2010 edition, seven points behind leaders Paraguay, yet Maradona believes his team can be champions.

Heaven knows, the great Marco Antonio Barrera is entitled to an easy comeback fight after all the tough battles he’s been in during his long, Hall of Fame career. And though most fight fans would probably have preferred it if the Mexican legend had decided against returning to the ring under promoter Don King this coming November 7th, the 34-year-old last seen losing on points in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao is, for good or bad, back.

World No1 Lorena Ochoa grabbed the limelight with a flawless seven-birdie 65 in the first round of the Evian Masters in France.
