These pictures are from Monday morning’s protest at the Mexican consulate in Portland. The Friends of Brad Will in Portland, along with supporters of Oaxaca, gathered in front of the Mexican consulate to call for justice in the case of Brad Will’s murder by Mexican paramilitaries, and justice for the people of Oaxaca.

With no political power or social standing in the new nation, the Mexicans whom the border “crossed over” had no recourse or protection as the wrecking ball of corrupt individuals and institutions of the new nation waged class and race warfare with impunity.

“Si, Se Puede: Expresiones de Cultura Latina” will open at the Ink People Center for the Arts, 411 12th St., with a reception during Arts Alive! from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
This is the fourth annual exhibit featuring expressions of Latin culture. The phrase “Si, Se Puede” means “Yes, we can” and has its roots in the farm worker movement led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. It is a call for justice, democracy and hope for individuals to be lifted up, themes that are incorporated into the show. Portrayals of cultural origins, women’s art, cultural identity and individualistic revelations are also part of the exhibit, which will include music and poetry as well as art.

The Cobb County Commission approved the housing restrictions by a 5-0 vote but delayed action on an ordinance governing on how day laborers can be hired until next month’s meeting.

On Aug. 29, 1970, journalist Ruben Salazar was too close to the action he was covering. As news director for the Spanish-language TV station KMEX and a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, he and his crew were reporting on the National Chicano Moratorium March against the Vietnam War. They witnessed 500 baton-swinging, tear-gas-throwing police confront 30,000 peaceful marchers at Laguna Park in East LA. The ensuing riot left hundreds injured and three dead, including Salazar.
A sheriff’s tear-gas projectile struck him in the head.

An alliance of Spanish, Polish and German legislators is watering down a resolution in the European Parliament that proposes tougher actions against femicides in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and Central America. Moving behind the scenes, the lawmakers have introduced more than 100 killing amendments to the strongly worded document.
