Toluca win Mexican title on penalties

City: Toluca won the Apertura championship on Sunday, beating Cruz Azul on penalties after losing 2-0 at home in the second leg of the final.

Cruz Azul striker Alejandro Vela went from hero to villain after he scored his team’s first goal but then saw his decisive penalty saved by Hernan Cristante as Toluca won the shootout 7-6.

Diego Maradona uses first press conference as Argentina manager to announce intention to win the World Cup

The new Argentina coach Diego Maradona this afternoon declared his intention to bring the World Cup back to his homeland more than 20 years after his greatest triumph as a player. Argentina have failed to reach even the semi-finals of the World Cup since Maradona inspired them to glory in 1986 by producing arguably the greatest series of performances by an individual in any team sport. They currently lie third in the South American qualifying league for the 2010 edition, seven points behind leaders Paraguay, yet Maradona believes his team can be champions.

Heaven knows, the great Marco Antonio Barrera is entitled to an easy comeback fight after all the tough battles he’s been in during his long, Hall of Fame career. And though most fight fans would probably have preferred it if the legend had decided against returning to the ring under promoter Don King this coming November 7th, the 34-year-old last seen losing on points in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao is, for good or bad, back.
