Local immigrant-rights activist Enrique Morones said he was thrilled but shocked to receive a public thank-you from Sen. Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate was launching into his speech Sunday at the National Council of La Raza convention. Obama, at the podium, had just thanked two top NCLR officials before his speech when he thanked Morones of Border Angels, a group that stocks desert water stations and lobbies intensely for immigrant rights, often with a theatrical flair and a blunt style that has drawn the ire of anti-illegal immigration activists.

WASHINGTON - John McCain says he has earned the trust of Hispanic voters by championing an immigration reform bill that nearly killed his presidential bid. The Republican presidential candidate also says, in remarks prepared for delivery Monday in San Diego, that Democrat Barack Obama failed to take a similar stand on the politically explosive issue of illegal immigration. McCain will speak to the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza. Obama appeared before the group on Sunday, another indication of the fierce jockeying for a critical pool of voters, a quarter of them undecided in a recent poll.

Obama invites Latinos to ‘walk together’ into White House - San Jose Mercury News

Obama on Sunday pitched his candidacy as a chance to “change the system in this country” that has rewarded the rich and powerful while Latinos have struggled. “And if we get to the polls this November, then we will walk together through those White House doors - and we’re going to shake things up,” Obama said. Several participants at the La Raza conference said Sunday they did not know much about Obama’s history or his platform but generally liked what he laid out in his speech, including education initiatives and a plan to encourage small employers to provide health care for workers with the aid of a federal tax credit.
